Friends of Dunchurch Society

About Us

We identify what needs doing in Dunchurch by listening to residents, people working in the village and people who are visiting the village.

Working in conjunction with the relevant local authorities we survey the proposed issue requiring work, research what is required in resources and funding to get the job done. Interestingly, Rugby Borough Council (RBC), Warwickshire County Council (WCC) and Dunchurch Parish Council (DPC) are between them responsible for different parts of the village's assets. We do not carry out any work that is the financial responsibility of one of these authorities.

Q. What does our village have in common with Ontario, Canada?
A. We both have a village called Dunchurch.

Just before Christmas 2018, we sent a letter of friendship to Mayor Chris Armstrong of the Municipality of Whitestone, Canada and have been delighted to receive his response, two small paragraphs of which are below.

'It is not by accident that our little village got its name. The founders of our village were George Kelcey and his wife Lucy Ann Manning, both of whom had been born in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. George was appointed Post Master October 1, 1875. It was George Kelcey that changed the name of the new community from Newcombe to Dunchurch after his ancestral home.'

Mayor Armstrong's full letter gives a fascinating insight to the founding of Dunchurch, Canada and the full document may be found on our website but for now, we leave the final words to Mayor Armstrong. 'We truly wish the Friends of Dunchurch Society every success in your many ventures. We look forward to an ongoing association with your Society.'
